The annual Match between the Representative teams of the Newcastle DGA and the Hunter River DGA was played at the new Scone Golf Course on the weekend
of July 27/28.
Perfect golf weather greeted the players – apart from a very cold start on Sunday morning.
Each team consisted of 6 x Seniors and 6 x Juniors. On Saturday a Senior was partnered with a Junior and the competition was 4BBB stroke Matchplay.
Sunday the competition was Singles Matchplay.
The Hunter River team got off to a fast start and led 4 matches to 2 after the 4BBB on Saturday. The team of Capt Greg McMillan and Hamish Ellison were
the only winners for the Newcastle team.
Sunday saw a comeback from the Newcastle team. Good wins in the Seniors to Chris Turnbull (5&4), Ben Hillard (4&3), an ill Mick Coutman (3&2)
and David Alexander playing at No.1 (2&1) together with good wins in the Juniors to the injured Brij Ingey (4&3), Caleb Bromley (3&2) and
Jake Riley (2&1) secured the win for Newcastle DGA. Special mention is warranted for Jacob Dundas, playing a No.1 he secured a draw and half
a point against the in-form Corey Lamb.
Congratulation to Hayden Gulliver from the Hunter River team who had a Hole-in-one on the 8th hole during the Saturday fourballs and became the first player
to record an ace at the new layout.,
Both players and officials were generous in their comments on the new Scone Golf Course The new course comprising Kikuu fairways and bent greens
is currently in excellent condition – the new layout is both interesting and challenging (particularly the par 3’s) with many very old gum trees strategically
placed. There is also a good variation in the teeing grounds for each of the 9 holes. Some commented that it was the best 9 hole
course that they had seen.
