2017 A Grade Pennants – Finals – Results

The Finals of the 2017 A Grade Pennants was contested today, Sunday March 26, at Newcastle Golf Club.

Division 1

Waratah GC and Toronto CC contested the Final – with Waratah prevailing in a closer contest than the scores might indicate.

A couple of early matches that swung Waratah’s way and finished on the 18th hole anchored the win – with honours shared amongst the other matches.

A close run thing but again – and for the 8th time in the past 10 years – Toronto found themselves on the wrong side of the scoresheet.

The Winners of this years A Grade Pennant Division 1 – Waratah GC are pictured below.

Division 2

Pacific Dunes and Muree contested the Final in Division 2.    Both Teams were undefeated during the preliminary rounds and had previously drawn
their Round match.

Again, in a see-saw match which saw alternate matches won and lost – the result was again a Draw 4 to 4.    Under the Rules – a player was selected
by each Team.    Team Captains –  Mat Dorney for Muree and Mark Rota for Pacific Dunes then played a sudden death playoff for the first
tee.  Mat Dorney had a chance to win on the first playoff hole – then Mark Rota missed a short putt on the 2nd hole.    A good tee shot
to the difficult par 3 third and a birdie putt saw Mark Rota and Pacific Dunes prevail and thus win this years A Grade Division 2 Pennant.

Vale – Paul Cortaville

It is my very sad duty to inform of the passing of one of the NDGA’s finest, current Vice-President, Past President, Past Secretary, Past GolfNSW Councillor,

Paul was a good friend and a tireless contributor to Golf Administration at  Club, District and State level.  His extensive contribution will
be sadly missed.

Paul suffered a stroke back in mid February and spent 2 weeks in JHH.  Investigations revealed further medical issues. A further episode recently
saw him under palliative care at home for a short period until his passing at 12.00am on Sunday morning, surrounded by his family.

Our condolences are extended to his wife, Vivienne and  family.

2017 A Grade Pennant – Results for Postponed Round 1

Today, Sunday March 19 we finally got to play the postponed Round 1 from February 12.

Division 1 teams were hosted at Muree GC with Division 2 at Merewether GC.  Both Courses were very wet after recent heavy rain with Preferred lies
through the green in place at both venues.  The Division 1 players had the worse of the weather today due to their early start at Muree GC when
they were forced to start in frequent showery weather.  This persisted for at least the first 9 holes.  The later starters in Division 2
at Merewether escaped the worst of the weather.

In Division 1 we saw good wins to Waratah and Toronto confirm their place at the top of the group and move forward to next weeks Final.  In the other
match last year’s Champions, Charlestown, recorded a consolation win over newly promoted Newcastle GC.

Division 2 was potentially a closer affair with no less than 4 teams having a chance to make the 2 team Final depending on results this weekend.  However,
a clear win by undefeated Pacific Dunes and a close win by the other undefeated team, Muree, saw both these teams progress to the Final.
In the other match Beresfield recorded their 2nd win for the year with a clear win over Tanilba Bay.

2017 A Grade Pennants – Round 5 Results

In this Round – Division 1 played at Pacific Dunes GC and Division 2 played at Charlestown GC. The weather was great for golf – fine, mild with light breeze.

Good wins were recorded by Waratah and Toronto whilst Nelson Bay recorded their first win in Division 1 this year with a close win over Newcastle.

In next week’s final round – Merewether will be looking to record a win over ladder leaders Waratah, and hope other results go their way – for them to
make the Final.  Wins to Toronto and Waratah will see them contest the Final on March 26 at Newcastle GC.

Division 2 saw clear wins to Pacific Dunes and Muree – with Shortland Waters prevailing over Hawks Nest in a close contest.

Next week if Pacific Dunes and Muree win they will secure their place in the Final.  Hawks Nest and Shortland Waters are not without their chance
if they win but will need other results go their way.
