B & C Grade Pennant Winners for 2016

Charlestown Golf Club hosted this years B & C Grade Pennant Finals on Sunday November 27.

The course was in excellent condition – being in the middle of their Club Championships – and the weather co-operated with showers clearing before play
started.  Wind increasing later was a challenge.

The C grade Final was contested between Horizons GC and Tanilba Bay GC. At the conclusion of the 6 individual games – the match was locked up at a 3 all
Draw.  Horizon’s Mark Atkinson and Tanilba Bay’s William Osborne then had a sudden death playoff.   Horizons were victors on the first hole
of the playoff  and therefore the Winner of the 2016 C Grade Pennant.

The B Grade Final was contested between Belmont GC and Pacific Dunes GC.   Again, at the conclusion of the 6 individual games – the match was drawn
3 all.   This time Belmont’s David Gates and Pacific Dunes’ Shane Beasley played down the first in a sudden death playoff.   A lip out then
a birdie on the first playoff hole  saw Belmont victorious and thus Winners of the 2016 B Grade Pennant.

Congratulations to the Pennant Winners and commiserations to our other Finalists .  Well done to all teams for the close and exciting Finals.

B & C Grade Pennants – Semi-Finals Results

Before the Semi Finals of this year’s B & C pennants could be conducted – a playoff had to take place to decide the B Grade Division 2  2nd placegetter.

This play off was between Hawks Nest and Pacific Dunes and took place on Saturday November 12 at Muree GC.   Pacific Dunes were the victors and took
their place in the Semi Finals on Sunday Nov 13.

This year the Semi Finals were held at Karuah GC on Sunday November 13.   The course was in it’s best condition after the recent rain and the weather
on the day was fine, warm and windy.

In C Grade we saw decisive wins to Horizons and Tanilba Bay over Merewether and Belmont respectively    Both results were a 5 to 1 win.

In B Grade Pacific Dunes defeated Merewether 5 to 1 with a couple of matches continuing past the 18th and being decided on the 20th and 24th holes.
In the other B Grade Semi Final Belmont prevailed over Nelson Bay by 4 matches to 2.  The result only being decided by a couple of 3 putts on
the last green.

This leaves our Finalists for this year –

B Grade –   Pacific Dunes and Belmont

C Grade –  Horizons and Pacific Dunes

The Finals have been arranged for Sunday November 27 at Charlestown GC – with C Grade at 10.30am and B Grade at 11.00am.

Newcastle finishes Second in Junior 4 Way

The Col Johnston Shield Junior 4 Way Tournament was conducted over the weekend of Saturday, Sunday November 5,6.  Merewether GC hosted this year’s
event.

Merewether GC was in very good condition, given that the 1st Round of the Club Championships was also conducted on the Saturday.  The weather was
difficult for golf with strong gusty winds on Saturday and still windy on the Sunday.

The format of this event is 3 Rounds of Matchplay with District Teams for Lower North Coast, Hunter River, Central Coast and Newcastle taking part.

At the end of competition – Hunter River DGA were the winners of the Col Johnston Shield when they remained undefeated over the 3 rounds. Newcastle DGA
were a close 2nd.

All of the NDGA team showed good a attitude and resilience irrespective of the state of their matches – and this augers well for future NDGA District Junior
teams.

We were very fortunate to have Col Johnston attend the presentation, present the Shield to the Hunter River team and address the Juniors
about the benefits that can be earned and learned from golf.

NSW Country Championships – Results

This year’s GolfNSW Country Championships and District Teams Event was held on the weekend of October 29/30 at Goulburn GC.

The NDGA team of 6 players were – Joe Darcy, Isaiah Melia, Mick Coutman, Mick Wade, Justin Ely and Kane Burt.

Of the 11 District Teams entered the NDGA team finished 4th – 13 strokes behind the winners, Golf Illawarra.

In the Individual 36 hole stroke event the NDGA players performed very creditably.  The best of the Newcastle group was Joe Darcy who finished 7th
with 4 over par, with Mick Coutman 18th on 7 over and Isaiah Melia 19th on 8 over.

The winner was Anthony Brunero from Golf illawarra on 3 under par from defending champion, Dylan Perry, Hunter River on 1 under par.

Goulburn GC, the venue for this event for the next 2 years as well, was in good condition considering that not long ago it was mostly submerged in floodwaters.
The weather made scoring difficult with a couple of showers during Saturday’s play and the wind increasing during the Sunday morning round..
