2016 District Championships – Full Report

The 2016 NDGA District Championships were held over 18 holes at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Sunday May 22.

The weather was perfect for golf with little or no wind and fine and warm. Hawks Nest golf course was presented in excellent condition and thanks must
go to the course staff as well as the ProShop and Club staff that assisted with the staging of this event. Special thanks to Captain Bob Morris and
President Lee Rankin for their assistance

With Qualification for A Grade pennants in place this year, it required  Clubs to field a minimum of 6 players with a GA handicap of 12.0 or less,
It was pleasing to see 130 on the timesheet and 120 taking their place in the field with the event this year reduced to 18 holes.

Carter Nepia won his first District Champion title with a two under score of 70. Carter also won the Junior District Champion title and got the trifecta
with a win in the Junior Champion of Champion event. Carter only qualified for the Junior Champion of Champions event by winning the Junior Club Champion
event at Tanilla Bay on the pervious Saturday.    Congratulation to Carter, get effort.      Another Junior, Luke Ferrier
from Merewether took out the Runner Up title from Toronto’s Josh Greenwood with both having a score of 71.

Luke Ferrier took the Junior District Champion Runner Up trophy.    In the Nett event Ben Roberts from Shortland Waters won from Bruce Clayton,
Hawks Nest and Peter Gibson, Nelson Bay.

The Champion of Champion event was taken out for the second year in succession by Iain Carthew from Beresfield with a score of 75.

NDGA JUNIOR PENNANT – 2016

This year’s Junior Pennant series will be held as a Handicap Matchplay event over 3 Rounds.  Rounds will be conducted on May 29, June 5 and July 3

Clubs can submit as many or as few Juniors as are available.   It is proposed to have 4 Selected teams.  Teams will be called Team Nitties, Team
Green, Team Higginbottom & Team Flanagan.

It is also unimportant what handicaps your Juniors currently have. The Team Selection process should ensure that they are matched against other Juniors
of a similar handicap and ability.

Please see the Details and Conditions of Play proposed for this year’s Pennant series. It is intended to play handicap match play in teams comprised of
players from several Clubs. So it is unimportant if your Club has 1 or 10 players. They will all get to play 3 rounds of matchplay in a team environment
with prizes for best individual and Club team performances.

Teams will consist of 8 players – can be Boys and Girls – all must be members of an NDGA District Club and be aged under 18 years old on the date of the
1st Round.

Team members will be allocated to each team in accordance with their GA Handicap on May 23.

Play will be in 4’s. The No1’s in each of the teams will play against each of the other No1’s in the 3 rounds. Similar for the No.2’s, 3’s, 4’s etc. Similar
to the format used in the Junior 4 Way Tournament.

Each match will continue for the full 18 holes.  Scoring will be based on plus 1 for a hole won, minus 1 for a hole lost and zero for a squared hole.

Prizes will be awarded for best individual score each round, best Club team and best selected team over the 3 rounds

Check the Event Calendar for details of each Round.

A Grade Pennant Finals – Winners Decided

Belmont Golf Club hosted this year’s Finals of the A Grade Pennants and was well presented by Course staff for the encounter.

Division 1 saw Charlestown pitted against regular finalist in Toronto.   With good wins to Isaiah Melia and Jye Picken at the top of the order and
other close results going Charlestown’s way – saw Charlestown win the Division 1 Pennant for the first time in many years by 5.5 to 2.5

Division 2 saw Newcastle GC playing against Nelson Bay GC – who were playing in their first A Grade Pennant Final.   Far from disgraced, Nelson Bay
were defeated by, a strong and undefeated this year, Newcastle side.  Big wins at the top of the order to Daniel Terry and Chris Turnbull anchored
the win by Newcastle by 6 to 2.

2016 A Grade Pennant – Finals

The 2016 A Grade Pennant finalists have been decided. Following the conclusion of round 7 of this year’s event the results were very close in both
Divisions.

A count back of games was required in Division 1.  Charlestown finished on top, losing only 1 match during the Rounds. A count back was required
to seperate Toronto, Belmont and Waratah when they all finished on 4 match wins.  Toronto prevailed with 2 more games than the other pair.

The Division 1 finalists will be Charlestown and Toronto.

Division 2 was a very close affair with Newcastle finishing undefeated on top with 6 match points. In close pursuit were Nelson Bay and Pacific Dunes,
whose match in the final round would decide who joined Newcastle in the Final.  The hard luck story belongs to Pacific Dunes, who for the
third year running have failed narrowly at the last hurdle to gain promotion to Division 1.  Nelson Bay, on the other hand, are celebrating
making the final of A grade Pennants for the first time in their history.

The Division 2 finalists will be Newcastle and Nelson Bay

The Final for both Divisions has been scheduled to be held at Belmont Golf Club on Sunday April 3

Division 1 Final (Charlestown & Toronto) will tee off from 8.30am

Division 2 Final (Newcastle & Nelson Bay) will tee off from 9.00am.

NDGA Officials for the day will be Paul Cortaville and Rod Carruthers.

2016 A Grade Pennant – Finalists Decided after Round 7

Round 7 and last round of this year’s A Grade Pennant series was held  on Sunday March 20.

For the last round – Division 1 was hosted by Waratah GC – with Newcastle GC hosting Division 2.

A close win to Charlestown over Merewether saw them cement their place at the top of the leaderboard and secure their place in the Division 1 final.

Belmont secured a good win over Muree – but just failed to secure enough game wins to challenge the finalists.  Shortland Waters capitulated to
the strong Toronto team 8 to 0, allowing Toronto to secure enough game wins to win the count back with Waratah and Belmont and take the other finalist’s
position.

The 2 teams to be relegated to Division 2 next year will be Shortland Waters and Muree.

In Division 2 – Despite not playing this Round, Newcastle’s undefeated record ensured they finished on top and secured a finals position.   In
a very close match, Nelson Bay secured the other finalist position by defeating  a disappointed Pacific Dunes outfit.

The 2 teams to be promoted to Division 1 next year will be  Newcastle and Nelson Bay.

Division 2 –        Newcastle GC,          Nelson Bay GC

2016 A Grade Pennant – Round 6 Results

Round 6 of this year’s A Grade Pennant series was held again in warm and humid conditions on Sunday March 13.

Division 1 was hosted by Belmont GC – with Nelson Bay hosting Division 2.

Wins to Toronto, Charlestown and Merewether have caused a log jam at the top of the leaderboard and set the scene for at least 5 teams having a chance
to finish top 2 after next week’s final round.

Charlestown remains in the box set – having only been defeated once – to secure a finals spot – if they defeat or draw with Merewether next week.
Depending on next week’s results it is still possible for Waratah, Toronto,  Merewether or Belmont to make the final.

Division 2 saw Newcastle remain undefeated and a clear leader after a good win over Beresfield. A big win to Pacific Dunes and a win to Hawks Nest
round out the Division 2 results.   Newcastle are set to finish at the top of Division 2, with the match next week between Nelson Bay and
Pacific Dunes determining who will finish second and thus gain promotion to Division 1 next year.

top 2 spots.

Division 2 saw Newcastle remain undefeated and a clear leader after a good win over Hawks Nest. Wins to Beresfield and Nelson Bay see Pacific Dunes
and Nelson Bay in a close tussle  for the 2nd position.

Toronto hosted Division 1 with Beresfield hosting Division 2.

With just over half of the Rounds completed the scores in both Division 1 and Division 2 are starting to tighten up.

Wins to Waratah, Belmont and Muree now see Waratah leading from Belmont on a count back with both on 3 wins.   Toronto is in third place from
Charlestown, again on count back with both Clubs having 2 wins.

Division 2 saw Newcastle remain undefeated and a clear leader after a good win over Tanilla Bay. Wins to Pacific Dunes and Nelson Bay see these Clubs
fill the second and third places respectively, albeit on a count back with both Clubs on 3 wins.
