NSW Vets Matchplay Tournament – Full Report

The 2015 NSW Vets Matchplay Tournament was held again in the Newcastle District over 4 days from November 2 through till November 6.

The 4 courses that hosted the Tournament were Belmont, Waratah, Newcastle and Charlestown.  The weather early in the week was a little wet but the
rains stopped to enable the last round at Charlestown to be completed in dry but hot and humid conditions.

All 4 courses were presented in excellent condition and all received complimentary remarks from the players.

A total of 94 players including 22 ladies contested this years event – an increase of approx 14 from last year.

The Tournament Director was again John Mason from Charlestown GC and again is to be congratulated on a job well done.

Semi-Final Results – B & C Grade Pennants

The Semi-Finals of this years B & C Pennants were held at Merewether Golf Club on Sunday November 15.

The weather was far from ideal with light rain interspersed with rain showers.  Pretty much rained most of the day.

3 of the 4 matches were incredibly close with a few games going down the 19th to achieve a result. Then 3 of the matches were drawn 3 all and had to proceed
to a sudden death playoff .

In B grade – Nelson Bay triumphed over Charlestown on the first hole of sudden death.  Newcastle recorded a clear win over Tanilla Bay.

In C Grade – Charlestown overcame Pacific Dunes on the 2nd sudden death playoff hole.  Belmont and Nelson Bay fought it out for 4 playoff holes before
Belmont prevailed.

B and C Grade Pennants – Round 7 Results

Round 7 of this years B & C Grade Pennants was conducted on Sunday November 8

The weather this week was a bit problematic for golf – with overcasting showery conditions.  The early players at Shortland Waters escaped without
getting wet.  However the players at Waratah, who teed off a bit later were not so fortunate.

Shortland Waters played host to Division 1 teams – with Waratah the venue for the Division 2 teams.

NDGA Juniors Triumph in Junior 4-Way

The NDGA team shared the honours with the Central Coast when they were declared joint winners of the Col Johnston Shield at the Junior 4 Way contested
over the weekend of Oct 31 and Nov 1 at Kurri Kurri Golf Club.

The Tournament suffered a set back when the Lower North Coast team failed to arrive.  The normal format of 3 x 9 hole rounds of matchplay was modified
to suit the reduced number of teams.  However, everyone got to play 27 holes of matchplay and all the feedback from the players and officials
was positive.   A great weekend for everyone. The weather held off on the Saturday with only light drizzle – with Sunday foggy then fine and warm.
The only complaint registered over the weekend was about the presence of about 8 million bush flies that called Kurri GC their home.

The NDGA team, comprising emerging Juniors rather than regular District Representative Juniors contained 7 players including 10 year old Jake Riley – who
won 2 of his 3 matches, including a match where he filled in for the Central Coast.

The NDGA team also included, for the first time, a young lady Junior, namely Makenzie Toole from Belmont GC.  The Central Coast team also included
a female junior and this may become the new makeup of future teams.

A special mention must go to the Newcastle team Captain, Reece Green, who won both of his matches, with a total of 2 over par score for the 2 x 9 hole
matches. His win in the final match, anchored the win over the Central Coast and enabled the NDGA team to equal the for/against score of the Central
Coast and share the title.   All of our team showed good attitude and resilience irrespective of the state of their matches – and this augers
well for future NDGA District Junior teams.

Newcastle Rep Team – Good win over LNCDGA

The NDGA and LNCDGA Representative Teams met for their annual match at Horizons GC on Sunday October 11.

The weather was perfect and Horizons GC are to be commended on the course presentation.

Despite having many players unavailable due to other commitments, Newcastle DGA demonstrated the depth of talent available to them by fielding a team that
easily accounted for the Lower North Coast by a 9 to 3 margin.

The Juniors performed very creditably, winning their Division by the margin of 5 to 1 – thus retaining the Challenge Cup.  In an ironic twist, the
only Junior match won by the Lower North Coast was by Belmont’s Rhys Ballinger, who the LNC borrowed when one of their Juniors was unable to attend.
Some might claim that as a clean sweep.

The Seniors, led by Team Captain, Tim O’Reilly, won several close matches to win their Division by 4 to 2.  Kane Burt struck a bit of form, having
4 under par the first nine and accounted for Lower North Coast’s Captain, David Bagust by 7 & 6.

Both teams are to be congratulated on the friendly spirit and the sportsmanship displayed  in each of the  matches.
