2018 Zone 2 Regional Championships – Report

On the weekend of August 5, 6 the NSW Zone 2 Regionals Championships were played at Cessnock GC.

93 players took part from the 4 Districts – Hunter River, Lower North Coast, Central Coast and Newcastle.  Each District fields a team of 21 players
– in Masters, Seniors, Colts and Junior Divisions and play for the Jim Baker Shield.

This year the team from the Central Coast DGA were victorious by 47 strokes from Newcastle and Hunter River.

Cessnock GC are to be congratulated on their presentation of the course and the Hunter River DGA team thanked for their usual excellent hosting for this
event.

The weather made playing conditions difficult – with very windy conditions on Saturday with windy and cold conditions on Sunday.

The NDGA team had a couple of outstanding performances – with Michael Wade from Charlestown coming in 4th overall and being Runner-Up in the 36 hole Nett
event.

The NDGA continued it’s dominance in the Junior event – with Josh Robards, Newcastle winning the Junior Regional Championship from Harry Cleare, Nelson
Bay.

Newcastle DGA will host this event in 2019 at a course TBA.

2018 B&C Grade Pennant Draw Released

The 2018 B &C Grade Pennant Series is set to start on Sunday September 16 for Division 2 Teams and September 23 for Division 1 Teams.

Major changes have had to be made to the format this year. The reasons for this are the dates for Clubs hosting a Round were set in the Program last October
– but not all Club qualified or entered a team in either or both grades. This left us with 6 Clubs in each of the B Grade Divisions – and 6 Clubs in
C Grade Division 1 and only 5 Teams in C Grade Division 2.

This resulted in Division 2 teams starting on Sunday Sept 16 at Muree – but having a 2 week gap between the last round and the Semi-Finals. Division 1
teams start a week later on Sept 23 at Waratah – but only have to wait a week after the last round for the Semi-Finals.

Again this year the Divisions were made using the Hunter River as the boundary – with Div 1 south of the River and Div 2 north of the River. It is proposed
to mix this up a bit next year to appease those players who would like to experience Courses remote from their home Clubs during the Pennant Rounds.

B Grade Oc Colley Cup Won by Jim Boyle

On Sunday August 5 the B Grade Oc Colley Cup was held at Tanilba Bay Golf Club.

124 players took part in what could only be described as weather perfect for golf – albeit off to a cold start.

Tanilba Bay GC was in good condition with the speedy greens and tricky pin positions giving some players nightmares.

Jim Boyle from Pacific Dunes off a 15 handicap was a clear winner – having an 84 for a Nett 69    Congratulations Jim.

He was followed by Darrin Maher, Pacific Dunes with a Nett 71 and John Milligan, Tanilba Bay with a Nett 73 on a 3-way countback.

Running in conjunction with the Stroke Nett event was a team event, The Lionel Clark Team Trophy – where the best 3 of 4 scores from each Club team were
totalled. Surprisingly, the team from Pacific Dunes #3 with only 3 members, Jim Boyle, Darrin Maher and Ryan O’Connor were the winners with a
score of 220.    Having the first and second placegetters in the Nett competition certainly helped.

C Grade Oc Colley Cup Won by Greg Chad

On
Sunday, August 5 the C Grade Oc Colley Cup was held at Toronto CountryClub.

90 players took part in what could only be described as weather perfect for golf – albeit off to a cold start.

Toronto CC was in good condition and setup as per the round of the Club Championships on the Saturday prior – so an interesting time for the C
Graders.   Some did not have any issues, with the first 7 placegetters having a Nett score lower than the Par of 72.

Greg Chad from Charlestown off a 21 handicap was a clear winner – having an 89 for a Nett 68 on a countback.   Congratulations Greg

Also on Nett 68 were Rick Wigham, Belmont and Garry Johnson, Nelson Bay in a 3-way countback.

Running in conjunction with the Stroke Nett event was a team event, The Lionel Clark Team Trophy – where the best 3 of 4 scores from each Club team
were totalled. The team from Nelson Bay #1 comprising Brian Pobje, Mark Twomey, Garry Johnson and Darren Hancock were the winners with a score
of 221.

Pacific Dunes Pair Win Trip to Bonville

On Sunday July 15 the District Final of the KENO NSW Men’s 4BBB Championship was conducted at Merewether GC.

This event is held in conjunction with the NDGA District 4BBB Championship.

28 teams – 56 players – representing 10 Clubs took part in the 4BBB Par competition.   It was disappointing that other District Clubs failed to participate,
including the host Club, Merewether, in what is an excellent chance for their members to win a 3 night trip to the State Final at Bonville in October.

The weather and course conditions were ideal and the players took advantage with some good scoring.

The winners on the day were the team from Pacific Dunes comprising  Adrian Russell and Andrew Auld – both A graders – who finished with Plus 7.

They were followed home by 2 teams from Muree – Peter Royal and David Nugent with Plus 5 and Greg Rasmus and Mark Elking with Plus 4 on countback.
the Tanilba Bay team of Rob Connell and Brian McGregor finished 4th with Plus 4.
