NDGA Stage Comeback Win over HRDGA at Scone GC

The annual Match between the Representative teams of the Newcastle DGA and the Hunter River DGA was played at the new Scone Golf Course on the weekend
of July 27/28.

Perfect golf weather greeted the players – apart from a very cold start on Sunday morning.

Each team consisted of 6 x Seniors and 6 x Juniors.   On Saturday a Senior was partnered with a Junior and the competition was 4BBB stroke Matchplay.
Sunday the competition was Singles Matchplay.

The Hunter River team got off to a fast start and led 4 matches to 2 after the 4BBB on Saturday. The team of Capt Greg McMillan and Hamish Ellison were
the only winners for the Newcastle team.

Sunday saw a comeback from the Newcastle team.  Good wins in the Seniors to Chris Turnbull (5&4), Ben Hillard (4&3), an ill Mick Coutman (3&2)
and David Alexander playing at No.1 (2&1) together with good wins in the Juniors to the injured Brij Ingey (4&3), Caleb Bromley (3&2) and
Jake Riley (2&1) secured the win for Newcastle DGA.  Special mention is warranted for Jacob Dundas, playing a No.1 he secured a draw and half
a point against the in-form Corey Lamb.

Congratulation to Hayden Gulliver from the Hunter River team who had a Hole-in-one on the 8th hole during the Saturday fourballs and became the first player
to record an ace at the new layout.,

Both players and officials were generous in their comments on the new Scone Golf Course   The new course comprising Kikuu fairways and bent greens
is currently in excellent condition – the new layout is both interesting and challenging (particularly the par 3’s) with many very old gum trees strategically
placed.  There is also a good variation in the teeing grounds for each of the 9 holes.     Some commented that it was the best 9 hole
course that they had seen.

Vale Lionel Clark

It is my very sad duty to have to report on the passing of our Patron and Life Member, Lionel Clark. For those that may not be aware, Lionel was the
father-in-law of our long-serving Secretary, President, and Treasurer, John Waanders.

Lionel passed away on Wednesday July 24 morning at approx 6.00am after a short illness necessitating a trip to the hospital. Lionel was 98 years old

Lionel was a “legend” amongst golf administration and not just his Club of Muree. He served the Newcastle District Golf Association with distinction-
being Vice President from 1970-75 – then President from 1975-87. He was awarded Life Membership of the NDGA in 1984.

Lionel’s influence in golf administration was widespread, with his serving on the Board of GolfNSW for many years and then moving to Golf Aust in several
roles, including Chairman.

Lionel will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
