NDGA Representative Team score clear win over Central Coast

Belmont Golf Club was the venue for the Annual match for the Artie Mollett Shield, played on Sunday, June 2 between the Representative teams from the Central
Coast and Newcastle DGA’s.

Despite 35mm of rain on Saturday and overnight – Belmont GC was in excellent condition and with the wind speed dropping to near zero and only a light shower
of rain – provided great conditions for golf.

The format for this event was 6 x Seniors plus 4 x Colts plus 6 x Juniors. and Newcastle regards this match as their benchmark for the year – with the
Central Coast normally providing the closest competition across all categories..

Last year at Wyong GC, the Newcastle DGA team recorded a very close win by 1 point.  This year the result was more decisive with Newcastle DGA winning
by a margin of 12 to 4.

The Seniors played solid winning with a margin of 4.5 to 1.5.  4 Players having 3&1 or 3&2  wins.  The Colts category recorded a
3 to 1 margin win with 4&3 or 3&1 being common scores.

The Juniors emulated the Seniors by winning their division by 4.5 to 1.5.   Big wins to Caleb Bromley, Jake Riley and Harry Cleare anchored the
win.

A Grade Pennant Winners for 2019

The Final for the 2019 A Grade Pennant Series were conducted on Sunday March 10.

Shortland Waters GC hosted this year’s Finals

The Division 1 Finalists were Merewether and Toronto.

A good win 5 & 3 to Scott Telfer (Merewether) and 3 & 2 Wins to Josh Greenwood and Jake Riley (Toronto) were the standout results in what was a
very close contest – with many matches finishing on the 19th, 18th or 17th holes.

The boys from Merewether prevailed in just about all of these close contests and ran out winners of this year’s Division 1 Pennant by 5.5 to 2.5

The Merewether team was knocking at the door last year – and finally broke through for a win this year.   Toronto was left to rue another missed opportunity.

Merewether - 2019

Back (L-R): Ben Robinson, Angus Neil, David Cook, Scott Telfer & Matthew Lister

Front (L-R): Nicholas Zuccon, Craig Jones (c), Luke Ferrier, & Aaron Duffy.

The Division 2 Finalists were Muree and Newcastle

Muree went through the preliminary round undefeated and were a clear favorite to take the title.

Someone forgot to tell the lads from Newcastle GC – and they did the job on the day.

Clear wins to Josh Robards, Ben Dawes and Bruce Hill anchored the Newcastle team’s winning of the Division 2 Pennant.

Newcastle - 2019

Back (L-R): David Dunlop (Manager), Troy Stonestreet, Chris Turnbull, Greg Frazer, Oscar Gilson & Bruce Hill

Front (L-R): Bill Tonkin (c), Josh Robards, Ben Hawes & Daniel Matthews.

A Grade Pennants – Finalists Decided after Round 5

Round 5 and the last round of the 2019 A Grade Pennants was played on Sunday March 3

Charlestown GC hosted Round 1 in weather perfect for golf.

Tensions were high with 3 teams, Merewether, Waratah and Toronto, vying for the 2 Finals places.  As well as securing a team win – the results of
individual matches would prove critical in determining the finalists.

In the first match – Waratah had a close win over hosts Charlestown by 4.5 to 3.5 – and this would prove crucial in the determination of the Finalists.
Then Merewether recorded a clear 5.5 to 2.5 win over Belmont – and this sealed Merewether’s place in the Final as the leading team.

The final match saw Toronto record a clear win over Pacific Dunes by 8 to 0 – and this margin was sufficient to propel them ahead of Waratah to secure
the second spot in the Final.

Despite Merewether, Toronto and Waratah all finishing on 4 wins for the series – the countback of Individual matches won, resulted in Merewether and
Toronto being our Finalists for 2019 in Division 1

Muree GC hosted Division 2 – again in good conditions for golf.

With the Finalists being already decided in this Division – the results from this round carried little value other than bragging rights

The NDGA Composite team recorded their first win for the series – with a close win over Nelson Bay by 4.5 to 3.5.   Good results for the Junior members
anchored the win.

Tanilba Bay and Hawks Nest played out a 4 all draw – that reflected their placing in the overall results.

Finally, in a dress rehearsal for the Final – Hosts Muree recorded a close win over the Newcastle team by 4.5 to 3.5 – to set up an enthralling contest
in the Final.

Division 1 Finalists – Merewether – Toronto

Division 2 Finalists – Muree – Newcastle

The Final will be held on Sunday March 10 at – Shortland Waters GC with Division 2 commencing at 9.00am and Divsion 1 following at 9.30am.
