A Grade Pennants – Round 4 Results

Round 4 of the 2019 A Grade Pennants was played on Sunday, February 24

Belmont GC hosted Division 1 in difficult conditions with frequent showers and strong winds.

This Division is getting very tight at the top – and confirming the closeness of the competition this year.

A clear win by hosts Belmont over Pacific Dunes and wins by Merewether over Waratah and Toronto over Charlestown has resulted in 3 Clubs, Merewether, Waratah
and Toronto now equal leaders with 3 wins each.

This leaves 3 Clubs, Charlestown, Belmont and Pacific Dunes, unable to reach the Final – but able to influence the Finalists – as they each play the 3
leaders in the last Round 5 at Charlestown next Sunday, March 3.

Tanilba Bay GC hosted Division 2 in fine but windy conditions.

Clear wins to Newcastle and hosts Muree – and a close win to Tanilba Bay over Nelson Bay has seen the Finalists already decided with Round 5 still to go.

Both Muree and Newcastle remain undefeated with 4 wins – and meet in Round 5 at Muree – for the right to claim favouritism going into the Final.

2019 A Grade Pennants Underway – Results Round 1

Round 1 of the A Grade Pennants was held on Sunday, February 3.

Division 1 was hosted by Waratah GC – in first foggy then fine conditions.

Despite having home advantage Waratah only managed a very close win over Belmont by 4.5 to 3.5.   This was the same margin when Toronto defeated last
year’s finalists Merewether.   Charlestown, boosted by the presence of the Pickin brothers, were too good for an understrength Pacific Dunes outfit
– winning 7.5 to 0.5.

This division is looking very close and competitive with 5 teams closely matched.

Division 2 was hosted by Newcastle GC in conditions perfect for golf – apart from a serious case of excess mosquitoes

Hosts Newcastle were too strong for Tanilba Bay winning 7 to 1.   The strong Muree outfit prevailed over Nelson Bay – winning 6 to 2.

In the other match – Hawks Nest proved too strong for the NDGA Composite side – winning 5 to 3

Next Round will be held on February 10 at Merewether (Div 1) at 10.30am and Hawks Nest (Div 2) at 8.00am

Encourage Shield Team wins Quarter-Final against Mudgee

On Sunday, November 2 – Shelly Beach Golf Club hosted the final of the Central West Division of the 2018 JNJG Encourage Shield between Teams from Mudgee
Golf Club and Newcastle DGA.

The result was a clear win to the team from Newcastle DGA by 5 matches to 1.

The team from Mudgee was made up of players very inexperienced in matchplay and on max handicaps.  They performed very creditably and pressured
the players from Newcastle due to the number of holes where strokes had to be given.

Decisive wins to Zac Rimmer, Amy Squires and Ryan Dundas anchored the win for Newcastle.

Newcastle DGA now moves on to the next stage – which is the Semi-finals and Finals at Newcastle Golf Clun on January 14, 15

All of these Juniors are wonderful representatives of Newcastle District – their behavior was exemplary regardless of whether they won or lost their
matches.

NDGA Team Perform well at Junior 4 Way

The team chosen to represent the NDGA were –

Max Duffy-Smith

Jaxon Brooks

Brock Best

Noah Lilley

Oliver Gilson

Ryan Dundas

Sam Barnes

The team traveled to Wingham GC on the weekend of November 3,4 and played against teams from Lower North Coast DGA, Central Coast DGA and Hunter River
DGA.

The usual format is 3 x 9 hole rounds of matchplay – but due to the extreme heat conditions on the Saturday afternoon – the 2nd 9 hole round was canceled
and the boys enjoyed the Motel’s pool for the rest of the day.

The team finished 3rd in a very close scoring affair – but a great weekend was had by all (including the officials and family members) – and was a good
introduction to our up and coming future District Representatives.

Below are photos of all the teams and the NDGA team.
